The 7 best web design agencies in Auckland (2027 guide)

The 7 best web design agencies in Auckland (2027 guide) 1644 870 White Rabbit

You’ve got three quotes in your inbox. One is $2,000, one is $20,000, and the third is a 40-page PDF that never says what you’re getting.

Picking from the best web design agencies in Auckland is hard when every homepage says the same thing. Bespoke. Results-driven. Passionate. Award-winning. None of that tells you who’ll suit your business and your budget.

So here’s a shortlist with an opinion on each.

Full disclosure: we’re White Rabbit, a web design and branding agency in Newmarket, Auckland, and we wrote this. Yes, we’re at number one. It’s our blog, so you saw that coming. We chose the seven, and Google ratings decide the order, so you can check it yourself. Every other agency here is one we’d happily point a client to when they’re a better fit, and we’ve said exactly when that is.

The short answer: the best web design agencies in Auckland, ranked by Google rating, are White Rabbit (websites and branding designed together), Fabric Digital (sites built around Google Ads and SEO), Web Digital (WordPress care and support), Small Business Web Designs (fixed-price packages from $599), Zesty Design (trades and local services), Forge Creative (content-rich sites) and Plato Creative (large full-service programmes).

How we ranked Auckland web design agencies: five criteria to make the list, then ordered by Google rating and review count

How we picked and ranked them

To make the list, an agency needed all five of these:

  • Auckland-based team you can meet in person.
  • Real, visible work for New Zealand businesses.
  • Reviews from actual clients.
  • A clear specialty, so you know what you’re buying.
  • Support after launch, because a website isn’t finished the day it goes live.

Every agency below meets all five. To order them, we used the one score anyone can check: Google rating first, then number of reviews where ratings tie. Details on each agency come from its own website and Google profile. Spot something out of date about your agency? Email hello@whiterabbit.nz and we’ll fix it.

White Rabbit: best for brand and website under one roof

whiterabbit.nz • Newmarket, Auckland • 5.0 from 43 Google reviews

White Rabbit is a web design and branding agency in Newmarket, Auckland, designing websites and the brands behind them side by side since 2011.

Most website problems start before the website. The logo doesn’t work small, the colours were picked for print, and nobody has written down who the business is for. Hand that to a web agency and you’ll get a nice-looking site that still doesn’t sound like you.

So the same team in our burrow does your logo design, your website design in Auckland, your brochures and your packaging, and everything looks like it came from the same place (because it did).

What that looks like in practice:

  • A homepage concept first. You see and approve the direction before we design the rest, so there are no surprises at page twelve.
  • WordPress with Elementor for marketing sites, so your team can update copy without calling us. Every site ships with a CMS manual.
  • Next.js and Sanity when the project is really a web app, with bookings, logins or payments.
  • SEO and Google Ads in-house, plus hosting and maintenance plans, so launch day isn’t the last you hear from us.

A recent example: recruitment company Franklin Smith had a website job seekers struggled to navigate. We rebuilt it around the job board. Listings run down the left, the full role opens on the right without leaving the page, and there’s a quick link to apply. Custom category icons, the client’s own greens and real photos of people keep it friendly rather than corporate. Applications rose 50% within two months of the redesign. See the Franklin Smith job search website.

Other clients include Air New Zealand, Kiwibank, Mainfreight and Griffin’s.

Best for: Businesses that want the brand and the website to land together, or whose current site looks fine but doesn’t feel like them.

Worth knowing: We’re a design-led studio, so if you need a fixed-price site live next week, number four on this list will suit you better.

Fabric Digital: best for websites tied to paid ads and SEO

fabricdigital.co.nz • Rosedale • 5.0 from 38 Google reviews

Fabric Digital is a Google Partner agency in Rosedale whose core is search, paid ads, social and analytics, with web design and development alongside. It says it has generated more than $10 million in sales for clients across New Zealand, Australia and the US.

Best for: Businesses that already know they’ll spend on Google or Meta ads and want the website built around that traffic.

Worth knowing: Fabric leads with performance marketing, so if the look of the site matters most to you, ask to see web projects similar to yours.

Web Digital: best for WordPress fixes and ongoing care

webdigitalauckland.co.nz • Takapuna • 5.0 from 35 Google reviews

Web Digital is a WordPress and WooCommerce specialist with more than 10 years behind it. Alongside new builds, it runs care plans, speeds up slow sites and cleans up hacked ones, and says it often replies within two hours.

Best for: Businesses happy with their WordPress site’s design that need someone reliable to look after it, or other agencies that need a hand with development.

Worth knowing: It’s WordPress all the way, so look elsewhere if you’re on Shopify, Webflow or Squarespace.

Small Business Web Designs: best for tight budgets

smallbusinesswebdesigns.co.nz • Auckland CBD • 4.9 from 105 Google reviews

Small Business Web Designs builds sites for start-ups and small businesses on fixed packages, advertised from $599 with delivery in around 15 business days, a seven-day express option and a money-back guarantee (conditions apply). It also does logos and business cards.

Best for: Brand-new businesses that need a professional site live quickly without a large spend.

Worth knowing: Sites are set up for you to edit yourself, and fixed packages keep the price down by keeping the scope tight, so plan to upgrade once the business outgrows it.

Zesty Design: best for trades and local service businesses

zestydesign.co.nz • Takapuna • 4.9 from 14 Google reviews

Zesty has spent more than 12 years building lead-generating websites and eCommerce stores for New Zealand businesses, with a client list full of electricians, builders, pool installers and hospitality businesses. It also offers hosting, maintenance and SEO.

Best for: Tradies and local service businesses whose website’s main job is making the phone ring.

Worth knowing: The focus is on conversion and leads rather than brand identity work, so bring your logo with you.

Forge Creative: best for content-rich sites

forge.co.nz • Mount Eden • 4.8 from 44 Google reviews

Forge lists designers, developers, copywriters, SEO specialists, strategists and illustrators on its in-house team. It was a Best Design Awards finalist for small-scale websites in 2020.

Best for: Organisations with a lot to say, such as charities, health providers and food brands, who need the words and the illustrations handled as well as the build.

Worth knowing: Forge’s breadth pays off when you need the words and pictures made too. If your content is already written, ask for a quote on design and build alone.

Plato Creative: best for a large full-service partner

platocreative.co.nz • Auckland and Christchurch • 4.8 from 20 Google reviews

Plato has been going since 2007 and says it’s the largest full-service agency in the South Island, with more than 60 specialists across marketing, branding, content, websites and AI. Its Auckland office is on The Strand.

Best for: Established organisations, including public sector and not-for-profits, that want one agency running the website alongside campaigns and strategy.

Worth knowing: The scale that makes Plato good at big programmes is more than most small businesses need for a website on its own.

How to choose a web design agency in Auckland

To choose a web design agency in Auckland, match its specialty to your problem, check its work for businesses like yours, and make sure you’ll own the site after launch. Start with what’s broken, not with the agencies.

  • No brand yet, or a tired one? Get the branding and the site done by the same team, or you’ll pay twice.
  • The site looks fine but doesn’t bring in leads? Look for an agency that talks about enquiries, calls and tracking before it talks about fonts.
  • You’ll be running ads? Pick someone who does the ads too, so the landing pages and the campaigns are built by people talking to each other.
  • You just need it fixed? You may not need a new website at all. A WordPress support specialist can sort speed, security and updates for a fraction of a rebuild.
  • Tiny budget, need to start now? A fixed-price package gets you live. Just plan to redo it in two or three years.

Then look at each agency’s work for businesses like yours. A portfolio full of tradies tells you something different from one full of banks.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Who will actually do the work? The person in the pitch, a junior or an overseas contractor?
  • What happens after launch? Who hosts it and keeps the plugins updated, and what does that cost each month?
  • Can we edit it ourselves? Ask for a demo of the editor, not a promise.
  • Who owns the site? You should own the domain, the content and the design files outright.
  • How many rounds of changes are included? And what does a round cost after that?
  • What do you need from us, and when? Most website projects run late because of content, not code. A good agency will tell you that up front.

Frequently asked questions

  • The best web design agency in Auckland depends on the job. For a brand and website designed together, we’d say White Rabbit (we’re biased, see above). For a site built around Google Ads, Fabric Digital. For looking after an existing WordPress site, Web Digital. For a quick, low-cost site, Small Business Web Designs. For trades lead generation, Zesty Design. For content-rich sites, Forge Creative. For a large marketing programme, Plato Creative.

  • For small businesses in Auckland, White Rabbit suits those who want the brand and the website done together, Small Business Web Designs suits tight budgets and quick launches, and Zesty Design suits trades and local services.

  • On this list, White Rabbit, Web Digital (WooCommerce) and Zesty Design all build online stores for Auckland businesses. Shopify suits most stores that mainly sell products; WooCommerce suits businesses already on WordPress.

  • Anywhere from under $1,000 to $50,000 and beyond. Fixed-price template packages start under $1,000. A custom small business website from a web design agency in Auckland usually lands between $5,000 and $20,000. eCommerce or complex sites with bookings, logins or integrations can run to $50,000 and beyond. Compare quotes on scope rather than the number alone: ask what’s included for copy, SEO setup, training and support after launch.

  • Most projects run four to 12 weeks from kickoff to go-live. The biggest variables are content and integrations, so having your words and photos ready is the quickest way to speed it up.

  • A freelancer can be great value for a simple site. An agency makes more sense when you need several skills at once (brand, design, development, SEO) or want support that doesn’t stop if one person goes on holiday.

  • WordPress suits most service businesses that want flexibility and to own their site. Shopify is the easy choice when selling products is the main job. Squarespace works for very small sites you want to run yourself. A good agency will recommend one based on your business, not on what it happens to build in.

  • Yes. Most of the agencies above work with clients across New Zealand over video calls. We also work with businesses in Los Angeles through whiterabbit.la.
